Privacy Policy — Plain Language, Gutter-Sized

Privacy Policy

gutter-calculator.com is a suite of free gutter calculators that run entirely in your browser. The roof measurements, rainfall values, and results you work with never leave your device — this policy explains the few things the site does process, why they are needed, and what we deliberately never collect.

01

Overview

gutter-calculator.com is a suite of free gutter calculators — sizing and downspout layout, accessory and fastening counts, hydraulic verification, and a purchase-ready shopping list. This policy explains what information the site collects, what it deliberately never collects, and the few exceptions that make the site work.

The design principle is simple: the calculators can do their entire job on your device. Roof footprints, pitch factors, rainfall values, run lengths, corner counts — none of it is needed on a server to size a gutter, so none of it is sent to one.

02

Information We Do Not Collect

The following are never required, never transmitted, and never stored on our side. They exist only in your browser tab for as long as the tab is open:

  • Roof footprint, sloped surface, or run measurements
  • Pitch, story height, or eave dimensions
  • Rainfall presets, design intensity, or your location
  • Downspout routing, corner counts, or BOM quantities
  • Shopping-list contents, ticked items, or exported PDFs
  • Your name, email, address, or any account identity — there are no accounts
03

Technical Data Collected Automatically

Like virtually every website, our hosting infrastructure processes standard technical information when your browser requests a page: your IP address, browser type and version, operating system, referring page, and request timestamps. This is a function of how the web works — servers need it to deliver pages and resist abuse.

This data is used for security (rate limiting, abuse detection), reliability (uptime monitoring), and aggregate statistics (which pages are visited). It is never combined with anything you entered into a calculator, because the calculator never tells the server what you entered.

04

Local Storage on Your Device

To remember preferences between visits, the site stores a small amount of data in your browser's local storage — not on our servers:

None of it ever leaves your device, and all of it can be erased at any time by clearing site data in your browser settings. The full list is short:

  • Your unit system choice (imperial or metric)
  • Your preferred theme (light or dark mode)
  • Your shopping-list checklist and ticked items
05

Cookies and Similar Technologies

The site itself sets only strictly necessary cookies or storage entries needed to remember your preferences and keep the site functioning. It sets no tracking cookies of its own and builds no cross-site profile of you.

Third parties that serve advertising or analytics may set their own cookies when their content loads, as described in the sections below. You can control or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time; the calculators will continue to work, since they do not depend on cookies to compute.

06

Advertising and Monetization

The site is free and funded by advertising. Ads are clearly separated from tool output — never inside a results panel, never formatted to look like a calculation, and never presented as a recommendation from the calculator.

Advertising partners may serve contextual ads (based on the page you are viewing) or, where permitted, personalized ads based on their own cookies and your broader browsing across other sites. These partners operate under their own privacy policies, which govern the data they collect. You can opt out of personalized advertising through your ad settings — for example, Google's Ads Settings — or via industry opt-out tools such as the DAA or NAI choices pages.

We do not sell, and have never sold, calculator inputs — there are none to sell.

07

Analytics and Measurement

We use privacy-respecting, aggregate analytics to understand which pages are useful — how many visitors a guide receives, which calculators are opened, how long a visit lasts. Where possible, analytics run without cross-site tracking and without building individual profiles.

We do not attempt to join analytics data to calculator inputs (impossible — the inputs are never sent), to advertising identifiers, or to any identity. Analytics answers questions about pages, not people.

08

Third-Party Services

The site relies on a small number of infrastructure providers to function: a hosting/CDN provider that delivers pages, an analytics provider that aggregates visit statistics, and advertising partners that fund the free tools. Each processes only what its role requires, under its own published privacy policy.

We do not share any user-provided data with third parties for their independent marketing use — because there is no user-provided data to share. If you contact us by email, the content of your message is used only to answer it and is retained only for as long as the thread is open.

09

Children's Privacy

The site is intended for homeowners, DIY installers, contractors, and building-science learners — not for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children, and the site's design makes that largely moot: there are no accounts, no profiles, and no personal data to provide.

If you believe a child has sent us personal information via the contact email, write to us and it will be deleted promptly.

10

Data Retention and Security

Because there are no accounts and no stored calculations, there is nothing for us to retain on your behalf — or to leak. Server-level technical logs (Section 03) are kept for a short operational period and then rotated out.

Emails you send us are retained only while the thread is active and deleted afterward. Local storage data (Section 04) is under your control entirely and persists only until you clear it.

The site is served over HTTPS, and the hosting infrastructure applies standard security practices. No system is perfectly secure, but the practical exposure here is small by construction: the most sensitive thing on our servers is a page request.

11

Your Rights and Choices

Under frameworks like the GDPR and CCPA, users typically hold rights to access, correct, export, and delete their personal data. On this site those rights are mostly self-service, because the data mostly is yours already:

  • Access & export: your inputs and checklist live in your browser — view or export them anytime
  • Deletion: clear site data in your browser to erase every preference and checklist permanently
  • Opt-out of personalized ads: use your ad provider's settings or the DAA/NAI choice pages
  • Email inquiries: messages are used to reply only; ask us to delete a thread and we will
  • Do-not-track: we do not build behavioral profiles, so there is nothing to honor — tracking is not the site's business model
12

Changes to This Policy

If the site's data practices ever change — for example, if a future feature required storing something server-side — this policy will be updated and the change dated at the top of the page. Material changes will be described in plain language, not buried.

The current version is always authoritative. The 'last updated' date above reflects the most recent revision.

Common Questions

Short answers to the questions this policy generates most.

Do you store the roof dimensions I enter?▼

No. Your footprint, pitch, rainfall, run lengths, and every other input exist only in your browser tab. When you close it, they are gone — nothing is transmitted or saved on our side.

Why does the site show ads if it doesn't track me?▼

Ads fund the free tools. The site carries no products and charges nothing, so clearly labeled advertising is the entire business model — kept separate from calculator output and never used to influence a result.

Can I use the site without accepting any cookies?▼

Yes. Block or delete cookies freely — the calculators run entirely in your browser and do not depend on cookies to compute. You will only lose saved preferences like your unit system or checklist.

What happens to my data if I email you a question?▼

The content of your message is used to answer it and retained only while the thread is open. Inputs or screenshots you send for a calculation check are deleted with the thread — they are never added to a list, because there is no list.

Do you sell data to gutter manufacturers or lead-gen companies?▼

No. There is no data to sell and no relationship of that kind. The site is not affiliated with any gutter manufacturer, supplier, or marketplace, and carries no affiliate links.

How do I delete everything the site has about me?▼

Clear site data for this domain in your browser settings — that removes local storage preferences and any cookies. Beyond that, there is nothing to delete, because there is nothing stored. For email threads, reply and ask; we will remove them.
